Time to Hit Reset on your Fitness Goals

Writer: Troy Johnson IITroy Johnson II

2020 is officially out of here and it's time for the annual "New Year, New Me" tradition that has everyone planning out their goals for the new year. Fitness and Finances are probably the top of everyone's vision board. I know it's on the top of mine. Here are a few things that I believe that can help you start fresh and get moving on those 2021 transformations:

  1. Write down your plans DAILY.

Since I started hosting virtual workout session in June, it became imperative that I had a well written plan on what the preplanned activities would be for that session. This included listing the exact exercises and modifications, understanding everyone's limitations, and the amount of time that we would spend performing the activity. 9 times out of 10, if you have a written plan that you can see, you are more likely to accomplish it rather than doing it off the top of your head. This is also includes your meal plan. Create a menu with the foods that you want to consume and times that you want to eat. If you can see the plan daily, trust it will help improve your discipline.

2. Find a Group Program or an Accountability Partner

Before COVID-19, I either trained with a group of people that I worked with or I would meet up with friends and have a lifting session with them. With gyms shutting down and being told to stay home, the home workouts and working out alone can be a bit mundane and boring. This is what led me to host my own virtual workout sessions to get that group environment that I "oh so" enjoy while at the same time designing workout programs for my friends and family to assist them with their own health and nutrition goals. An accountability partner is great because they are someone who can keep us on track and help keep us moving when the lack of motivation begins to hit. Trust me it will happen!

3. Try New Challenges

This is for both fitness and nutrition. When the gyms shutdown back in March, it was difficult trying to find a workout routine that would compare to lifting weights at the gym to get the kind of gains that I was aiming for. I was fortunate to already have resistance bands and equipment so it took some researching and browsing YouTube until I found workouts that would give me comparable results using what I already had available without having to visit the gym. I challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone and use what I have to work to my advantage.

With nutrition, I challenged, not only myself but my group as well, to adopt a meatless diet one week out of the month. It was something that I wasn't sure that I could even do and you know what? We all were able to do it for several months and we saw great results from it. Don't be afraid to experiment with foods and programs. There are no one diet or fitness program that fits all. You have to do what works best for you and eliminate what doesn't.

So for the New Year, I challenge you to Reset what you're used to doing and start fresh using these three ideas. Happy New Year Family!
